August 2018 saw the official opening of the refurbished and extended entrance at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. The £2.2m project, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, provides a larger and more comfortable area to act as a support hub and relaxing space for patients and their families visiting the Beatson.
The Beatson is regarded internationally as a leading cancer treatment centre. Macmillan worked closely with the Beatson, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as well as staff and local charities during the design and construction process.
The improved facilities will help ensure the level of care and support patients and families receive matches the excellent clinical care already provided by the Beatson. The new front entrance support hub provides:
- Expanded Macmillan Information and Support Centre where patients and carers can receive emotional support and information on cancer and treatment.
- A larger and brighter café space for patients and visitors to meet together.
- A refurbished multi faith sanctuary / quiet space.
- Improved patient waiting areas for transport home.
- Enhanced garden space to provide a quiet and peaceful environment.
- Children and teenager’s space
Thomson Gray were delighted to provide Lead Advisor, Cost Consultancy and NEC3 Supervisor duties to NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde through Frameworks Scotland 2. The Principal Supply Chain Partner (PSCP) was Laing O Rourke with design input from NORR Architects and Mott MacDonald. The original design was created on behalf of Macmillan by Aitken + Turnbull Architects who were retained as concept architect throughout the construction stage.
